Kitchenless cook

October 24, 2011 - Dorma Tolson
Right now I am a cook without a kitchen. Well, technically, I still have a kitchen, but the kitchen sink, stove, cabinets and counter space have been eliminated. I'm in the middle of a kitchen renovation. When it's all done, I will have new cabinets, new walls, new counters and sink, a new floating laminate floor, all new appliances and ... ta-ta-ta-da ... a dishwasher, for the first time in my married life — and that's been nearly 28 years. I had several apartments with dishwashers during my single years, but since 1983, my husband and I have been the dish washers and dish dryers. I'm very excited to have that essential appliance back in my life, especially since it will be contained in an updated and redecorated kitchen along with a new stove, refrigerator and washer and dryer. In the meantime, every bit of kitchen equipment that wasn't nailed down has been moved into the family room. We have just completed our first "kitchenless" week, and I believe we've survived it very well. Yes, we've eaten more than our share of carryout food and we've eaten out a time or two. My slow cooker and my microwave have also gotten a workout. Our initial completion estimate was three weeks, but now our contractor has moved that date to Nov. 15. I'm just hoping it can be completed in plenty of time for Thanksgiving, which is always at my house. If not, someone else in the family will have to pinch hit for me. Otherwise I'll have to figure out how to cook a turkey in the microwave or slow cooker.
