The key to winter survival

February 12, 2011
Morning Journal News

Is it just us, or is there more stress out there these days?

We have been seeing a lot of police reports concerning domestic arguments and domestic violence, more than usual. And on some, the causes are just plain dumb.

Why, we ask, would people be arguing over this? Why would they be calling the cops over that?

And it is just not family disputes. There have been similar reports between neighbors and complete strangers.

The reason for the increase is probably simple: cabin fever.

Winter has been long. Since the first of December, we can think of one day when there was no snow on the ground.

That was Jan. 1, when temperatures in the 40s mixed with a nice rain to melt away the snow.

On Jan. 2, it snowed again. And it has stayed with us.

Ten straight weeks of unrelenting winter is wearing on us all. It is hard to get around and do things, to want to do things. It has also affected our moods, our patience. It probably didn't help that the darn Stillers lost.

But, we have to hold on. The weather will break ... one of these days.

Until then, take it easy, take deep breaths. Just try to get through it.
