Better response was needed to season's first real snowfall

January 4, 2012
Morning Journal News

Mother Nature caught us off guard yesterday morning and many of us faced treacherous drives to work for the first time this winter.

Forecasters erred by predicting snow totals that were lower than those received in many areas. But that's still no excuse for the untreated roadways which included heavily traveled state routes 11, 45 and 164, as well as streets in many of our municipalities.

As soon as it became apparent that the white stuff was piling up, why weren't the snowplows and salt trucks dispatched? Yes, we've been fortunate in that we hadn't had to deal with snow so far this winter, but shouldn't those responsible for public safety still remember what needs to be done when inclement weather strikes?

Even more lake effect snow was predicted through last night. Let's hope that ODOT and municipal road crews got their act together and took care of the roads for this morning's commute.
