LISBON - An additional 34 miles of Columbiana County roads will be resurfaced with blacktop this year, thanks to an infusion of federal and state funds.
Chief Deputy County Engineer Bob Durbin said they applied to participate in the program through the Ohio Department of Transportation and were fortunate to be awarded a combined $4 million in funding. Under the program, federal highway funds cover 80 percent of the resurfacing costs, with state money used to pay the rest.
This will enable the county to blacktop 34 miles of road it normally would have been unable to resurface. The engineer's office is only planning to blacktop seven miles of county road using its own money.
In recent years, the engineer's office tried to stretch dollars by resurfacing some of its blacktop roads with chip-seal due to rising asphalt prices, which are tied directly to the cost of oil. A blacktop road cost over $100,000 a mile to resurface compared to $17,000 for chip-seal.
One of those roads, Depot Road, will be returned to blacktop this year, thanks to the state and federal money.
Following is a list of the county roads to be resurfaced this summer with blacktop: Homeworth Road, 4.6 miles; Valley Road, 2.5 miles; Georgetown Road, 13 miles; Depot Road, 7 miles; North Ellsworth, 0.2 miles; 10th Street Extension, 2.9 miles; Fairfield School Road. 3.5 miles; Y & O Road, 3.9 miles; Sprucevale Road, from Calcutta-Smith Ferry Road to Cannons Mill Road; and Calcutta-Smith Ferry Road, from state Route 170 to Parkway, and the bottom three lanes to the Pennsylvania state line.
