Searing heat from another day of temperatures in the 90s once again kept county firefighters busy battling brush fires. After fighting a wheat field fire on state Route 558 and a field fire on Beeson Mill Road, Leetonia firefighters answered at least three calls of railroad ties and brush along the tracks on fire. The department wasn't surprised by the calls and was just assisting the Norfolk-Southern Railroad workers who normally put out the fires caused when their grinder cleans the rails on the tracks. Norfolk-Southern has its own fire crews that to fight the fires that crop up during the stripping of the rails. Thursday, townspeople just seemed to be more aware of the fires nearby their businesses and homes and called the village fire department to respond.
