LISBON - New drilling permit applications are on the rise again in Columbiana County after a brief lull, with five news applications and/or permits issued in the past several weeks.

The following is a list of the new permits by township and location, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the county engineer's office. All of the applicants are Chesapeake Exploration:

-Fairfield Township: Lehman unit, accessible from state Route 7.

- Franklin Township: Milltree unit, accessible from Foundry Hill Road.

-Middleton Township: Benner unit, accessible from Justison Road.

- Salem Township: Roy D unit, accessible from Winona Road.

- Salem Township: Mueller unit, accessible from McCracken Road.

This brings to 49 the number of separate drilling sites. The number of permitted wells is 57 because each site can have more than one well, most of which are in various stages of development.

Two of the wells have been fracked and another dozen are waiting to be fracked, according to the ODNR activity report. The only producing well in the county as of mid-September was the Sanor Farm unit in Knox Township.

Hanover Township still leads with the most permitted drilling sites in the county, with nine. The following is the list of the other townships and permits and/or applications: Butler, five; Center, three; Elkrun, five; Fairfield, three; Franklin, three; Knox, four; Madison, two; Middleton, five; Salem, four; Unity, two; Washington, two; and West, two.
