Rebels getting started

COLUMBIANA -Crestview's boys basketball team didn't have a great start to the season, but things are starting to come together.

Using a 19-point, six assist performance from junior guard Collin Gilbert, the Rebels had no trouble in knocking off rival Columbiana 68-41 on Friday.

Crestview is 6-4 heading into key Inter-Tri County League upper tier home games with South Range on Tuesday and Lisbon on Friday of next week.

"We make no excuses, but we started late because of football," Gilbert said. "We practiced two times before our first game. Now we're getting the hang of it and getting more into the basketball mentality. I think we'll be all right."

Gilbert sparked the Rebels in the first quarter by making three three-point plays in a row to give the home team the 11-3 lead. He hit two from the outside and then was fouled while making a lay-up on the other three play.

"I just had open looks and I hit a few of them," Gilbert said. "Once they came out after I hit a few, I pumped faked, drove and got an and-one on the play."

Columbiana fell to 0-9.

"(Gilbert) is a really good player," Columbiana coach Jason Baker said. "If they're making jump shots, they're tough to beat. It's because they're so strong inside."

Crestview's leading scorer on the season Robert Logan added 22 points and eight rebounds. Derek Bable chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds. Forward Josh McDade had eight points and six assists off the bench.

"We're particularly excited about our junior (McDade) who didn't play last year," Crestview coach Herman Miller said. "He's probably our best passing forward."

Gilbert said the all-around passing strengths of the Rebel big men has been impressive so far.

"Half the time Robert Logan is leading the break, giving up the ball and giving it back," Gilbert said. "All of them can pass and it really helps."

Columbiana was led by Bryce Franken's nine points.
