SUMMITVILLE - A 13-year-old girl was killed Monday evening when a four-wheeler she was riding flipped over near Summitville.
Abby Walker, a Southern Local seventh-grader, was riding near state Route 644 in Franklin Township when the accident occurred. According to county Sheriff Ray Stone, Franklin Township Fire Chief Jim May began CPR and assistance soon came from a KLG ambulance crew, but she reportedly did not recover.
Two sheriff's deputies responded to the call, which came in at 9:22 p.m. from May. A helicopter ambulance was also called initially but was canceled.
Walker is the daughter of Detective Steven Walker of the Columbiana County Sheriff's Department and Shannon Gonzalez-Marra. Detective Walker reportedly came into the sheriff's department on Tuesday only to pick up photos of his daughter from his office.
Superintendent John Wilson of the Southern Local School District said Walker was an honor student who participated in the EXCEL program, robotics and volleyball. She also mentored younger students through Project More.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out from the Southern Local staff and family to her family for their loss," Wilson said. "There weren't too many dry eyes in the buildings today."
Wilson said he called a meeting of staff members before school to tell them of Walker's death. Grief counselors were available for students and staff during the day on Tuesday.
