James W. DeLuce Sr. age 89, of Salem, passed away at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, May 26, 2013 at the Essex of Salem III.
He was born June 9, 1923 in Irondale, Ohio, son of the late Dominic and Freda (Hogue) DeLuce, moving to Salem in 1942.
James was a sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 147th Combat Engineers in the Normandy Invasion.
James retired in 1986 from the A&P Warehouse in Salem and had previously worked as superintendent of ODOT. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and enjoyed sports, music and politics.
His wife, Perine (Ciotti) DeLuce, whom he married, December 19, 1942, preceded him in death May 18, 2012. A son, James W. DeLuce, Jr. and a brother, Joseph DeLuce also preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Lee (Joseph) Hollenshead of Leetonia; three grandchildren, Lee Joseph (Marla) Hollenshead of Salem, Joseph Richard (Diana) Hollenshead of Ann Arbor, MI, and Kimberly (Chris) Dickey of East Palestine; and six great-grandchildren, Jessica, Joey IV and Annabel Hollenshead and Tyler, Dylan and Stephanie Dickey; two sisters, Jane Tolson of Irondale, OH and Janet Chetock of Monaca, PA; and a brother, Donny DeLuce of Florida.
A funeral mass will be held at 12 Noon on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at the St. Paul Catholic Church with Father Robert Edwards officiating. Calling hours will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Stark Memorial Funeral Home prior to the funeral mass. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery with military honors provided by the Salem Honor Guard.
