Asa Baumgarner

Asa Augustus "Gus" Baumgarner, 92 of East Liverpool, OH died at his home on Saturday, June 15, 2013 following a brief illness. He was born in Glen Jean, WV on November 15, 1920 and was a son of the late John Franklin Baumgarner and Eva Alvirda (Wilson) Baumgarner Gray.

Living most of his life in this area, he worked for the Goodyear Tire Company then was the manager for the former Litten Tire for 28 years. In later years, he worked as an oiler for the Buckeye Coal Company for 18 months. Gus was a graduate of East Liverpool High School and attended the Glenmoor Presbyterian Church. He was a life member of the Yellow Creek Grange, the Tri Angle Seniors and its fun band, the Boot and Saddle Club and the East Liverpool Dahlia Society. During World War II he served with the Merchant Marines as an able bodied seaman.

His wife, Ernestine (Brown) Baumgarner, whom he married on April 3, 1942 died in 2000.

He is survived by three daughters: Linda (David) Miller of Alliance, OH, Patricia Baumgarner (Lawrence Cummings) of East Liverpool, OH and Diana (Christopher) Juchnowski of Burton, OH; a close nephew: Charles Howard (Sue Pennybaker) Baumgarner of Lisbon, OH; three sisters: Juanita Cebulak of Youngstown, OH, Amanda Merriman of Wellsville, OH and Lorena Dee Gruver of Youngstown, OH; one brother: Allen Baumgarner of Midland, PA; six grandchildren: Kirk (Amy Hutchman) Miller, Amy (Robert) Hill, Laura Cummings, Gregory Cummings, Andrew Juchnowski and Matthew (Jayne) Juchnowski; one adopted granddaughter: Gabriella and Edward Manning; two great grandchildren: Jane Miller and Eva Miller, as well as a dear friend: Mary Hackney of Calcutta, OH.

Besides his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by one sister: Alvirda Brletich and eight brothers: Raymond, Delmer, Rex, Willen, Sheldon, John, James and Charles Baumgarner.

Services will be held at the Calcutta Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 11:00 AM with Retired Pastor Gene Toot officiating. The Tri State Burial Group will accord military honors.

Burial will follow in Columbiana County Memorial Park.

The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home in Calcutta on Monday, June 17, 2013 from 6-8 PM and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
