EAST LIVERPOOL - Former Idaho Avenue resident Rachel A. Hoffman Delaney passed away early Friday morning, August 2, 2013 at the East Liverpool City Hospital. She was 86.

She was born in VanWert, Ohio, on August 23, 1926, a daughter of the late Mary Baucher and Homer J. Hoffman.

A 1944 graduate of East Liverpool High School, she then received her Bachelor's Degree in Education at Geneva College. Rachel later attended Kent State University, earning a Master's in Education degree. She remained loyal to her alma mater, and enjoyed her affiliations with the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association through the years.

A longtime educator, Rachel taught in East Liverpool City Schools for over 25 years, retiring in 1983 as an elementary teacher. In 1977, she was honored as a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar, an award recognizing excellence in education.

Rachel was a longtime member of First Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where she had been a Sunday School superintendent and teacher. She also served as a volunteer chaplain at East Liverpool City Hospital for over 10 years. Always happiest when thinking of others, she could often be found helping at various church functions.

She was preceded in death on January 27, 1997 by her husband, Ronald C. Delaney, whom she married on October 2, 1953.

Surviving is a daughter, Susan Spear, and her husband, Rev. Dr. Bruce Spear, of Elizabeth, CO, along with three grandchildren: Emily Spear, Peter Spear and Vanessa Spear Paletta, and her husband Stephen. Also surviving is her sister Gertrude Barrett Glefj.

Rachel was preceded by a sister Daisy Celio, and four brothers, Dale, Ralph, Sam and Charles Hoffman.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Wednesday, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Bruce Spear, of the Elizabeth Presbyterian Church will conduct a funeral service at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Thursday August 8th. Burial will follow at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
