Unity- Helen K. Kulifay, 84 of Unity, passed away at 4:45 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2013, in Fairfield, Ohio where she resided for the last 2 years.
Helen was a longtime resident of Unity Ohio, on the family farm for 55 years. She also resided in Boardman for 10 years and was born and raised at 530 Cameron Ave. in Youngstown. She moved to Fairfield two years ago to be with her family.
Mrs. Kulifay was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1947, where she was Co-Valedictorian. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree for Kent State University, where she was Magna Cum Laude in 1970. She also received her Master Degree in Education from Youngstown State University.
Helen was a teacher of special education at McKinley School in Lisbon for 30 years as well as East Palestine for 6 years. Helen also was an associate with SNPJ and was a homemaker on the family farm for 55 years. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish at St. Matthias Church, where she was in the Infant of Jesus of Prague Guild Prayer Group and was a Past CCD teacher.
Helen was Past President of Lisbon School District LEA and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gama Society of Educators, the Slovene National Benefit Society (SNPJ), and the Ukrainian National Association (UNA). She also was a Red Cross blood donor having donating over 8 gallons. Helen also was involved in 4H(leader), Campfire/Bluebird (leader), Cub Scout (leader), and PTO/PTA member.
Her husband, Joseph J. Kulifay, whom she married November 24, 1948 in Youngstown, died December 30, 2004.
She is survived by daughter, Marilyn Kulifay, Attorney, Houston Texas, Joseph P. (Angelica), President of Bronco Excavating and subsidiaries; grandsons, Joseph J. and Michael A., Fairfield Oh.; daughter, Elaine (Joseph) Kulifay Guntner; grandchildren, Joseph U., Margaret, and Paul Advance N.Carolina; daughter, Joan Kulifay Orange Ca.; son, Paul (Pamela) Kulifay Vice President of Bronco Excavating Inc. Fairfield Oh.; sister-in-law, Theresa Kulifay Poland Oh.; nieces and nephews to the late John Kulifay, John T. Kulifay (Jeanette) Poland Oh. ,Dr. Annette Caroline Hamilton Parkersburg WVa., Daniel J. Kulifay Poland Oh., and Mary K. Kraznaski Poland Oh..
She also leaves extended family and close friends; the Tylka Family and cousins Youngstown Oh.; aunt, Bertha Eszenyi Poland Oh.; the Baron Family Youngstown Oh.; all nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Mary Klema Newport Beach Ca., including all her long time teaching associates.
Helen was an extraordinary, vibrant, and gifted individual. She is loved by her family and will be deeply missed.
A prayer service will be held Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 9:15AM at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish at St. Matthias Church at 10:00AM. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
Friends and family will be received Friday, September 20, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the funeral home. The Infant Jesus of Prague will be having prayers at 5:45PM.
