LISBON - Without his case going before the Columbiana County grand jury, Bryan C. Paugh, 35, Heritage Drive, Beloit, pleaded guilty Wednesday to prosecutor's information on a sexual battery charge.
Paugh, who appeared in the custody of the county sheriff's department, was accused of having sexual relations in his basement with a 14-year-old girl.
Assistant County Prosecutor Timothy McNicol said following Wednesday's unscheduled hearing he was pleased the teenage girl would not have to testify because of Paugh's decision.
The grand jury is meeting at the courthouse this week. Without the plea, McNicol said this case could have been one of the ones presented.
Paugh had been bound over from municipal court near the end of August. His bond had been set at $150,000 while he waited for the grand jury to meet. Instead, McNicol said an agreement was reached with Paugh's attorney and he agreed to waive his right to have the case presented to the grand jury. He pleaded guilty.
Paugh is scheduled for sentencing on Nov. 8. McNicol said he will ask for five years in prison, the maximum sentence for the charge.
