Helen Halko

NILES - Mrs. Helen D. Halko, 93, a resident of Niles for over 70 years, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2013, at 12:53 a.m. in Forum Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren.

Mrs. Halko was born April 19, 1920, in Jefferson County, Ohio, a daughter of John C. and Ethel Skinner Liggitt. She was a graduate of David Anderson High School, Lisbon, in the Class of 1938, She had been employed at the Ravenna Arsenal during WWII, where she met her husband, the Niles Glass Plant of General Electric, and the offices of the former Montgomery Ward, upon it's opening.

A member of the Niles First United Methodist Church, she was a master seamstress, making all of her clothing. She also created her own personalized doll collection. When her children were young, she was active in the PTA and the Niles McKinley Band Boosters. She was an amateur horticulturist, primarily raising African Violets. She loved plants and flowers in and outside of her home, a lady with a true "green thumb". She will also be remembered as a tremendous house keeper, cook, and a tremendous pie baker.

Her husband, John Halko, preceded her in death on February 19, 2010. She was also preceded in death by a son, Terry J. Halko, on June 11, 1995, two sisters, Thelma Hill, and Mary Louise Dankhaus, five brothers, John, Charles, Rollin, Robert, and Wayne Liggitt,

Helen is survived by a son, Robert A. Halko, of Cincinnati, two sisters, Wilma J. Liggitt, of Columbiana, Ethel "Babe" Hiner, of Salem, and a brother, James S. Liggitt, of Columbiana.

Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Niles City Cemetery with the Rev. Nathan Howe officiating. Entombment will follow.

The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to the Trumbull County Animal Welfare League Shelter, 546 Brunstetter Road SW, Warren, 44481.

Arrangements and care has been entrusted to the Fox Funeral Home, 4700 Market Street, Boardman, 44512.
