Veterans Day is a tribute to those who keep us free

November 10, 2013
Morning Journal News

It all began on Nov. 11, 1918 and was originally known as Armistice Day.

It was the celebration of the end of World War I, the war that was called "the war to end all wars."

Unfortunately, "the war to end all wars" was just wishful thinking. Since that day long ago, Americans have been involved in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, as well as conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Armistice Day officially became a holiday in the United States in 1926, and a national holiday 12 years later.

On June 1, 1954, the name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans. Unlike Memorial Day which started as a day designated to remember men and women who had died while serving, Veterans Day was established to honor everyone who served in the military, both in peacetime and in war

We are pleased to see the number of organizations and schools throughout Columbiana County holding events to honor our vets and recognize their unselfish service to our country.

Among the county schools holding Veterans Day events Monday are Lisbon, Columbiana, United Local, East Liverpool, East Palestine, Crestview and Southern Local. Some schools will serve breakfast to local vets, while others will honor them in assemblies filled with speeches and patriotic music. The city of East Liverpool is planning a parade and wreath-laying ceremony Monday. American Legions and VFWs in several of our towns will also be holding dinners for vets today and Monday.

On Monday, as we honor those who fought to ensure the freedoms we Americans hold so dear, let us also pay tribute to those who continue to endanger their lives in Afghanistan and other areas of the world. And, please pause for a moment of silence at 11:11 a.m., the exact time of the signing of the armistice on Nov. 11, 1918. Also be sure to thank each veteran you know personally for fighting to preserve our way of life in the greatest country on Earth.
