EAST LIVERPOOL - Beginning next year, board of health members will be required to complete classes in order to keep their seats.
The local health board was advised at its meeting Thursday by health Commissioner Jelayne Dray that, as of January, members must complete two hours of continuing education.
Dray said the good news is that board members will not have to travel to attend classes since she can serve as the presenter. The presentation will take place during a regularly scheduled board meeting.
Topics that meet state requirements include accreditation, ethics, Ohio Public Health Advisory Board, finance, public meetings and local board of health members' roles and responsibilities.
Members will receive certification upon completing the training.
The board approved a resolution Thursday setting a temporary budget for 2014 which is little changed from this year's budget.
The budget showed total health expenses of $158,143 which includes $119,023 in personnel costs and $39,120 in operating expenses. The food service fund totals $12,000, while the nursing fund totals $5,100.
Also approved Thursday was a recommendation by Dray to make the final three salary payments for sanitarian Jim Ferguson from the personnel expense salary budget instead of the food service fund from which his salary is normally paid.
After the meeting, Dray explained that is due to the food service fund being somewhat low due to the closing of two food service establishments during the year.
She reported to the board her pleasure that a new food service operation, the FireStreet Grille, has opened in East End and was in full compliance with all requirements prior to opening.
She issued a reminder to potential food service operation owners they must first contact the health department and also reported she expects to license another new operation in the East End in the near future.
Health nurse Stephanie Summers offered a report on safely preparing turkey for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday which included tips for thawing, preparing, stuffing and cooking to proper temperatures.
The board's next regular meeting is at 4 p.m. Dec. 19.
