Morning Journal News

LISBON - Two local social service agencies that provide homeless assistance will be able to continue doing so after receiving another round of federal funding for their programs.

The Columbiana County Mental Health Clinic received a combined $312,000 to provide housing for the mentally handicapped, while the Community Action Agency was awarded $140,000 to continue operating a county homeless shelter in Lisbon.

The health clinic's money is for two years and used to subsidize apartment rentals for about 20 adults and young people with mental illnesses. Only those mentally handicapped who meet the criteria and have no relatives or friends willing to take them in are eligible for placement.

In addition to help pay for rent, the money is used to purchase some furnishings and pay the salary of the "monitors" to help the residents,

The grant money awarded the CAA pays the rent for the Lisbon house that serves as the homeless shelter as well as the salaries of the staff that supervise the facility.
