EAST LIVERPOOL - A trucking business plans to expand its East End operation if City Council approves a recommendation made Tuesday by the Planning Commission to change the zoning classification on property it is planning to buy.
Commission members considered a proposal by owners of the property at 1331 Pennsylvania Avenue, formerly the site of Tad Motors which closed in 1993.
Representing the heirs was local attorney Joe Ludovici, who said the Harnett Trucking Company has made a down payment on the 6.27-acre parcel of land, but the sale is contingent upon having the current B-5, Central Business, zoning classification, changed to M-3, General Industry.
In the past, the city had actually changed the classification from M-3 to B-5 at the owners' request for another potential buyer, but Ludovici said that sale never transpired.
The trucking company, which is currently located on State Street, plans on razing the existing structure on the property and building a new one, paving way for the expansion of its business and hiring more employees, according to Ludovici.
He said the building has been "run down for awhile" and that, while the family had leased it to a company that operated a trucking business, letters were received from the city saying it was a non-conforming business due to the zoning classification.
Service-Safety Director Ryan Estell, also a member of the Planning Commission, said the Harnett Company also has facilities in Canton. He said it has no room for expansion at its current facility in East End.
The commission approved the request, which will now move on to City Council for consideration.
Councilman Chuck Wade was in the audience and lent his support to the move, saying, "You can count on my vote. Maybe this can get something started in the East End, along with the new Dollar General store."
