Church to host dinner, concert
A community potluck and free concert will be at the at Leetonia Mennonite Church, 764 Columbia St., on July 17. The potluck will begin at 5 p.m. and guests are to bring a salad or dessert using local food items to complement hot sandwiches made from pasture-raised chickens. NYC bus trip set in September
Seats are still available for the Salineville/Southern Alumni Community Scholarship Foundation's Red Eye New York City bus trip. The bus will leave the Southern Local K-12 campus at 11:58 p.m. Sept. 12 and return at 5 a.m. Sept. 14. Cost is $100 per person and the money is non-refundable. Camp Fear will open at?BCSP
Camp Fear, featuring ghost hunts, tours, and camping, will be at Gretchen's Lock in Beaver Creek State Park, July 19-20. The free camp is hosted by Dark Shadow Ghost Tours and Ghosting 12 Paranormal. Those not wishing to camp, can still take part in the tours which start at 1 p.m. July 19. There will also be appearances from Esther Hale, Gretchen Gill, Lucy Cobb, Jake the Night Watchman, and other ghosts from the area. Poker run benefits United Way
Backdrafts Pub & Grill on St. Clair Avenue in East Liverpool will host the 15th annual United Way Poker Run Saturday. Rider sign-ups begin at 10 a.m., and bikes depart at noon. The cost is $10 per person, with proceeds benefiting the United Way. More information is available at 330-385-2082.
Work to close more of Route 558
Beginning July 16, state Route 558 will be closed for two days just west of Lower Elkton Road for a culvert replacement by ODOT's maintenance crew. Route 558 is already closed about a mile west of this location and just east of state Route 164 for a $1.13 million bridge deck replacement project that began in June. Traffic should use the detour posted for the bridge project which is south on Route 164 to Route 517 east back to 558, and reverse. This closure should only affect local traffic.
Paxson will rock the fairgrounds
The Zack Paxson concert to benefit the Lisbon First United Methodist Church food pantry is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds. The concert is following the Soul to Sole Fun Run. There will also be drum, Tae Kwon Do and Zumba demonstrations, as well as games and food. The concert was incorrectly listed as being at the church.
School supplies needed in EP
East Palestine Social Concerns is collecting items for its annual school supplies giveaway through July 27. Items can be dropped off at the library or village churches. Some needed items include 24 count crayons, glue, pencils, erasers, folders, paper, tissues, zippered bags, and related items. The giveaway is from 9:30-11 a.m. and 5-6 p.m. Aug. 11 at Centenary United Methodist and is open to East Palestine District families only.
Church to host lawn festival
A community lawn festival will be at Paradise Church, 10020 New Buffalo Road, from 4-7 p.m. July 19, rain or shine. The festival will feature food, raffle baskets, a bake sale, games, and a country store. Musical entertainment will begin at 3 p.m.
Scavenger hunt slated in Salem
A free scavenger hunt for all ages is planned for 6:30 p.m. July 23 in Salem's Waterworth Memorial Park. The hunt will begin at pavilion nine, and participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Led by Jason Reynolds on the Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District, the hunt is being hosted by the Salem parks department and library. Registration is not required. Buses, soap boxes and scenic rails
The Salem Memorial Building Association will be sponsoring four bus trips, with the first being July 26 to the Soup Box Derby in Akron. Additional trips include a mystery tour on Sept. 20, Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad on Oct. 11; and Stan Hywett Hall and Gardens Christmas Tour on Dec. 20. Bus tickets are $15 to $20. CTC offers adult ed classes
The Columbiana County Career & Technical Center's ABLE program will begin free Academic Skills Brush-Up/GED classes in Lisbon, Salem, and East Liverpool on July 15. ABLE is also offering a free Introduction to Health Care Sciences that covers basic anatomy, biology, medical terminology, and contextualized mathematics, to anyone considering an education in the health care field. Salem Area Chamber of Commerce's Legislative Affairs Committee will host a luncheon July 30 at the Salem Community Center.
