Lisbon to mark 222nd birthday with art show

LISBON — Stevie Halverstadt of the Lisbon Landmark Foundation updated Columbiana County commissioners Wednesday on the upcoming Lisbon Landmark Foundation Pancake Breakfast and Student Art Show on Feb. 15.

Scheduled from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Lisbon First United Methodist Church at the corner of Washington and Market streets in Lisbon, the breakfast is $10 for adults and $5 for children.

“Look at the artwork and have some pancakes,” Halverstadt said.

The commissioners will be the judges for the artwork by students from McKinley Elementary and Lisbon David Anderson Jr/Sr High School, whose themes follow the history of the historic village founded in 1803.

Lisbon will celebrate its 222nd birthday and is the second oldest town in the state of Ohio, which was also founded in 1803. Marietta is the oldest.

According to Halverstadt, the purpose of the fundraiser for the Lisbon Landmark Foundation is to educate kids on Lisbon’s history and raise funds for the group to do restorations of historically significant properties, such as the Nace building on Market Street.

The focus for McKinley students will be the cannon located on the square in downtown Lisbon. Halverstadt said the twin cannon is located at the Columbiana County fairgrounds and both cannons were donated to the village by President William McKinley.

The focus for the high school students will be Lady Justice, who stands atop the downtown courthouse as a reminder of blind justice for everyone. The statue was created by the former Mullins Mfg. in Salem.

During their meeting, commissioners welcomed members of Leadership Columbiana County, led by Executive Director Amanda Frost. The group’s website describes Leadership Columbiana County as a “non-profit organization that provides intensive classroom and hands-on experience to build leadership capabilities, with a class of new potential leaders each year.”

After the meeting, commissioners spoke with the group about county government. Frost said they also planned to visit other offices in the courthouse.

In other matters, commissioners authorized county Engineer Bert Dawson to join and maintain memberships in eight different groups at a total cost of $10,575, including the County Engineers Association of Ohio, which accounts for $6,500 of the total.

The commissioners also: appointed Commissioner Mike Halleck as the representative to the County Commissioners Association of Ohio, with Commissioners Roy Paparodis and Tim Ginter as the alternates; reappointed Greg Lipp, Paul Lease and Tim Weigle to new terms on the county Planning Commission; reappointed commissioners’ Deputy Clerk Beth Duvall as the county loss control coordinator for 2025; and approved hirings requested by county Department of Job and Family Services Director Rachel Ketterman, with Lona Burkey of Lisbon as an eligibility referral specialist in the public assistance division and Lisa Johnson of East Liverpool as social service worker II in the social services division.

The next meeting of county commissioners will be 9 a.m. Jan. 22 on the first floor of the downtown courthouse in Lisbon.
