Smoking determined to be cause of brush fire

ST. CLAIR TOWNSHIP — Kids smoking was determined to be the cause of a March 14 brush fire in the area of Moore Road and Milton Avenue, according to the incident report provided by Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD).

CVFD arrived on the scene at 3:58 p.m. St. Clair Police Department was also called to the scene due to the burn ban currently in effect.

The fire burnt leaves and down brush in an empty lot of brush and woods. Firefighters also found a burning sweatshirt.

According to the incident report, there were some kids smoking and accidentally caught dry leaves on fire.

The firefighters had the fire, which burned a 20-foot by 20-foot area, under control in minutes, preventing it from spreading further.

The CVFD is reminding residents that there is a statewide burn ban from March 1 through May 31 during the hours of 6 a.m. to 6p.m.
