New Waterford officials considering new road levy
NEW WATERFORD — Village officials are considering a new 2-mill road levy to replace the current one set to expire next year.
Mayor Shane Patrone explained that council is only in the discussion phase of the potential new levy at this point.
“The millage would be the same, but there could be a small increase depending on an increase in home values. We don’t have those numbers yet,” he added when asked whether the new levy would result in a tax increase for residents.
The 2-mill levy that will expire in 2026 generates roughly $25,000 a year for the road department and generally doesn’t cover the entire cost of the road resurfacing completed, he said.
The village is responsible for the maintenance of seven miles of roads and Patrone said the new levy could cover the cost of equipment used to repair and surface roads, including salting and plowing.
The village currently has two plows, a paver, a roller, an additional pickup and numerous smaller equipment.
“While I believe it could be used for employee salaries, it never has. We normally use the whole amount on resurfacing each year,” Patrone said.
If council approves moving forward with a new levy it would appear on a general election ballot and residents would not begin paying on it until January of 2027, if approved by voters.
